Swindon Town will look to sign another striker before the summer transfer window closes as they look for further squad depth.

Harry Smith has arrived this summer after getting double-digit goals last season with Sutton United to add to Aaron Drinan and Paul Glatzel, who struck up a strong partnership down the stretch last season after they both arrived in January.

Across pre-season, Swindon have experimented with various different combinations of that trio in Mark Kennedy’s 352 formation, with Glatzel having even played parts of the final two friendlies in midfield to accommodate all three at the same time.

Sean McGurk did play in a front two with Smith in his only appearance of pre-season but beyond that three there is a lack of depth, with academy prospect Botan Ameen currently the next in line to play through the middle.

Marcus Bignot spoke after the victory over Wycombe Wanderers and said that Swindon would be looking to bolster that area of the squad in the coming weeks.

He said: “Until Chesterfield we are [considering playing all three] and then we might not and then we might, who knows?

“We have got three really good centre-forwards, but we know we have to bring in in that area, you can’t carry three centre-forwards with the system that we play.

“It was really important that all three get minutes, because they are really valuable to us and so we had to rejig.

“It was not ideal in terms of what we have done, but I am sure that everyone will be in agreement that having those three getting the minutes under their belt getting ready for Chesterfield, all three are in a really good place mentally and physically.”

However, there was a scare for Swindon as Drinan had to come off at half-time against Wycombe and Bignot revealed that it was a forced switch that led to Nnamdi Ofoborh replacing him at the break, although it should not be a problem for Chesterfield.

He said: “It was a forced substitution, he had to come off, it was right at the end of half-time.

“I spoke to the referee politely, so I am really happy with myself for that, it would have been a penalty, the ‘keeper did come through the back of him, but there was a little nudge from Aaron just prior to that on the centre-back.

“He was coughing up blood and so the doctor saw him, but it was just a precautionary measure.”
