CIRENCESTER head pro Ed Goodwin was pipped in the latest Gloucester & Somerset PGA Medal – by his amateur playing partner, writes Danny Hall.
Goodwin saw off his fellow professionals in the tournament on a brutal day at The Player's Club, Bristol with his one-over-par 73.
But Brickhampton Court amateur Alex Ireland, who is thinking about turning pro, came in with the leading score of 71.
The Codrington layout at the Bristol venue is tough enough on a still day but when the strong winds that blew across the course were coupled with the soft conditions underfoot it became a very demanding examination for the 37-strong field. This was proven as the average score for the field was just under 80 at the end of play!
The Cirencester man's round included a couple of birdies and a trio of bogeys to gain some valuable Order of Merit points and move up to fourth in the standings behind leader and reigning champion Giuseppe Licata (Chipping Sodbury).
