FAIRFORD Town suffered a penalty heartbreak as they lost 4-2 on spot kicks to Cadbury Heath in the GFA Challenge Trophy Final.
Played at Gloucestershire FA's headquarters Oaklands, Cadbury’s early pressure paid off in the 19th minute through Cory Simpson’s header from George Boon’s inch-perfect cross.
Andy Black’s men quickly doubled their lead following a swift counter attack. Simpson was the hero again with a calm finish to give his team an early advantage.
Keen to respond to their early deficit, Gareth Davies’s men pulled a goal back through Levi Cox’s strike. The striker controlled a crossed ball before aggressively finishing into the back of the net.
After the half-time break, Fairford continued their search for an equaliser and found the vital goal from Lee Smith’s low shot, his 32nd goal this season.
With neither Gloucestershire side able to find a winner in 90 minutes, the tie went straight to penalties. In a tense shoot-out, Sam Ockwell and Smith saw their spot kicks saved and Cadbury Heath won 4-2 to be crowned as GFA Challenge Trophy winners.
A cup final defeat means Fairford Town miss out on an historic league and cup double but the Uhlsport Hellenic Division One West champions will enjoy life in the Premier Division next season.
