SHERSTON throws down the gauntlet to teams from other villages ahead of this weekend’s annual mangold hurl.
The increasingly popular root vegetable-based sporting extravaganza starts with a mass "Agincourt Hurl" just after 12.30pm on Sunday, with musical accompaniment from Doddington Brass Band and the Mangledwurzels, who will be entering a team in the challenge.
This year sees the first official outing for new summoner Graham Hayman, who stepped into the role following the death of Malcolm Jarrett last year.
A ceremonial Anointment of the Normans by the Mangold Maids takes place in an over 16s event at the Rattlebone Inn from 9pm on Saturday Admission to the village hall field from noon on Sunday is free, entry for teams of three is £5 and the event includes a bar, barbecue and stalls.
Proceeds go towards village hall funds and local community groups.
