DENNIS Walmsley, of Bourton Road Runners, showed his class with a convincing victory in the Globe 5k on June 19.

On a hot evening, Walmsley led the field round the one-lap course in the second of this summer series of once-a-month races held at Sandhurst on the edge of Gloucester.

Showing strength built up from his high-mileage training, he pulled away from the chasing pack to finish well ahead of his nearest rival in 15 minutes and 31 seconds.

This victory will doubtless gave him confidence in his build- up to the forthcoming 100k race in Scotland.

Tom Newbould, an impressive junior talent in the Bourton club, once again showed how good he already is.

Tracking Dennis in second place until half-way, he was looking strong until the heat got the better of him and, after running through a bad patch, dropped behind the leading pack.

Nonetheless, showing the strength and grit needed to make it at distance running, he worked through the latter stages of the race to overtake three in front of him, finishing fifth in 16.31.

Rob Edwards also had an excellent run. As a relatively newcomer, he ran this event for the very first time and was pleased with his time of 18.09. For it not only earned him 13th place overall, but also a prize for first V40 outside the first ten.

Richard Bufton, who was aiming to break 19 minutes, just missed out with a time of 19.12 while Carolyn smashed the 25-minute barrier to finish in 24.06. Results: Dennis Walmsley 1st 15.31; Tom Newbould 5th (1st U17) 16.31; Rob Edwards 13th 18.09; Richard Bufton 27th 19.12; Carolyn Coleman 56th 24.06.

This weekend sees the final-ever staging of the 'Bourton 15' race.

This infamous, hilly Cotswold course has been an annual challenge for many and this is the last chance for those keen enough to take up the challenge.

In a well supported and friendly race, most people claim to have enjoyed themselves - well once they have completed it!

If it seems like your sort of thing, then entries are still open and the club also expects to take entries on the day.

Assemble at Bourton Vale Sports and Social Club on the Rissington Road in Bourton this Saturday ready for a 6pm start.

The same evening sees the county championships one-mile challenge on a fast, flat course into Bourton village.

Fast times are expected and a prize goes to anyone breaking the four-minute barrier. Start time is 5.45pm and all spectators are welcome.
