THE COTSWOLD Savoyards present Gilbert and Sullivan's Princess Ida at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham from Monday, June 13 to Saturday, June 18.
Princess Ida has heard the rallying cry of the feminists and taken it one step further. While the suffragettes are calling for votes for women and arguing for sexual equality, Ida declares that women are the superior sex and sets up her own version of Cheltenham Ladies' College at Castle Adamant. No men are allowed within its walls!
Princess Ida has been updated to Edwardian times and the comedy side brought to the fore with the Prince Hilarion and his two chums having to disguise themselves to get into Castle Admant - which is when the fun really begins. Leslie Hendrie plays Ida, Fiona Hale is Psyche, Lis Organ, Melissa, and David Johnson, King Hildebrand. Simon Lewis is the horrible Gama and Brian Crosby plays Gama's son, Arac, with Ralph Barnes in the part of Prince Hilarion.
The show is directed by Tony Jones and Peter Meason is musical director.
