A YOUNGSTER barely into his teens took just two shots to sink the ball on a 416-yard par-four hole in Cirencester Golf Club's Champagne Breakfast and Texas Scramble last weekend.

A member of the team that finished fourth and which inclu-ded his father, James Smith, 13, recorded an eagle on the 16th during Saturday's competition.

Some 63 hardy souls assembled early morning, prior to dispersing to all parts of the course for an 18-hole Texas Scramble that began with a shotgun start at 6am.

They all returned to the clubhouse at 9.30am where they were served with champagne and a full English breakfast.

There were some excellent scores with the winning team of past captain Peter Stone, Mark Priest and Marcus Adey getting a gross 12 under par 58, net 55.9.

Other top placings are: 2 S Kirman, A Buchan, T Stone, net 57.6; 3 D Organ, S Mitchell, D Seabrook, net 58.3; 4 R Smith, J Smith, P Denning, net 60.3.

The juniors played their final North Glo'shire Junior League game against Brickhampton Court on Sunday in glorious weather.

Needing a win to get them through to the finals that will be played at the Forest of Dean, they were full of enthusiasm and really up for the match.

Regrettably, it was not to be their year as Brickhampton played well on a good course to win 3.5 to 2.5, giving them the glory of going into the finals on August 22.

Juniors' club captain Scott Edgell won his game and consoled the rest of his team on a good season.

Scott's father Chris, who joined in the celebrations by making a hole-in-one during a morning competition, bought drinks for all the young players - non-alcoholic, of course!

The section held the Senior Captain's Day competition on June 28 which saw rain only when most competitors had retired to the clubhouse.

The 77 players that took to the course met with varying degrees of success in a Stable-ford played off full handicaps.

After a countback, the winner of the Senior Captain's Vase was Len Painter with 43 points (H21 but now H19).

Mr Painter is remarkable in that, if more than one prize were permitted per person, he would have won the overall prize, the Over 70s Trophy and also any over 80s prize that may be offered in the future!

The runner-up, with 40, was Brian Brant, a mere stripling by comparison. The Over 70s Trophy was also won with 43 by John Landau (H18 but now H16). In second place on 39, and only after a count-back, came regular contender Eric Downs, another octogenarian.

Other players who finished on 39 were Gerry Bruton (H5), Frank Hilton (H12) and Sam Shrouder (H25).

Nearest the pin prizes went to Dave Warden and Ted Smith, the straightest drive on the fifth hole to John Ritchie, and the longest drive accolade to David Fletcher on the 12 hole - next year's seniors' captain-elect.

Altogether, it was a most enjoyable competition, particularly the refreshments supplied at the 11th by Seniors' captain Mick Barham, who was superbly assisted by Mesdames Barham, Alderton and Fletcher.
