A MORETON community centre devastated by the July floods has been given a £60,000 cash boost to fund its restoration.

St David's Centre has been closed since July when nearly three metres of flood water flooded the electrics, heating system and the interior.

But a huge grant from the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust has helped the centre reach its £700,000 fundraising target.

The building, used by Gloucestershire County Council's youth service, Moreton Playgroup, Young Carers and the Brownies, was due for a makeover just before the disaster struck The Reverend Stephen Wookey said: "The floods arrived two days before we were going to show the plans to the church congregation. It needed quite a lot of work doing to it to set it up for the next century."

The project to rebuild the centre is now halfway through, set to be completed by September.

The roof has had to be re-insullated and re-built, internal walls have been put in and a new extension has been built.

There is now £20,000 left to raise to finish to project.

Rev Wookey said: "It looks terrific now and none of us really expected it to look as good as it does."
