A SOLID-GOLD Cheltenham Gold Cup trophy won in the 1940s is going up for sale at auction.
The cup, won in 1948 by Cottage Rake (trained by Irish trainer Vincent O’Brien), is valued at between £10,000 and £15,000.
It makes up one of the 500+ lots going under the hammer on Wednesday, November 13 in a Race to History horseracing memorabilia auction.
The cup is a solid 18-carat-gold trophy cup, hallmarked Dublin and 1948 and featuring a horsehead handle.
It is a scale replica of the original 1924 Cheltenham Gold Cup trophy created by Solomon Blanckensee & Sons and commissioned by Simmons of Chesterfield.
The Race to History auction is being held by sports memorabilia auctioneers Graham Budd Auctions in partnership with Weatherbys.
It will take place at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket, Suffolk.
Graham Budd said: “It’s great to be working alongside Weatherbys again on this auction.
“The quality and provenance of the items in this sale is unprecedented, and we’re fortunate to be selling several lots in aid of some great charities which have a huge impact in the racing world and beyond.
“We’ve had plenty of interest from around the world, so we’re in a good position to raise a lot of money for these good causes.”
