THE introduction of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at another Wiltshire supermarket has sparked controversy.
Aldi confirmed it had introduced a new parking system at its Malmesbury store after signs were installed at the supermarket’s car park.
These signs warn customers that ANPR cameras are enforcing a maximum stay of 90 minutes with no return within four hours and no parking outside of store opening hours.
Anyone found to have broken these rules could be slapped with a £70 fine and many customers have voiced concerns about the crackdown.
Similar measures were recently introduced at Sainsbury’s in Chippenham and thousands of pounds worth of fines were reportedly dished out to rule-breakers.
Aldi emphasised that the new parking system would not change the amount of time that customers are able to park at the store.

The chain added the limit for parking at the site had always been 90 minutes and that the changes were intended to ensure there are always enough spaces available for Aldi customers.
Speaking on Facebook, customers have been warning other drivers of the clampdown on rule-breakers.
Nick Gregg said: “They warned us about it, and now it's finally happened - parking restrictions at Aldi.
“Apparently they will get tickets cancelled if you can prove you were shopping in the store over and above the allotted time (most likely you'll need a receipt).
“Absolutely no parking whatsoever out of hours - even if you're charging your car.”
Reacting to the news, many were unhappy that the restrictions may prevent them from returning to the store twice in one day.
Vicki Foss said: “So if you forget something, it’s bad luck, you can’t return for four hours to get it? That’s ridiculous.”

Tim Thornbury added: “No return within four hours, so I guess if you forget something, better go to Co-op or Waitrose. Who thinks these rules up?”
But others believe the new restrictions are reasonable and pointed out that they have been in place at other Wiltshire branches for some time.
Maxine Bigwood said: “Aldi (Melksham) has been doing this for over a year.
“You have to put your reg in on leaving the store.
“This was due to McDonald's next door, plus cars doing doughnuts. Whatever they are.
“Been working perfect.”
Deb Harvey added: “Surely that’s fair enough?
“The car park is for people using Aldi, not for having a little stroll about town.
“Why would you assume that you can just park there at any time?”
