9. Special volunteer member of ministry team at Tetbury Parish Church
9 Well done and congratulations and a big thank you must go to a very special volunteer member of the ministry team at Tetbury Parish Church who helped celebrate the 30th anniversary of the historic ordination of women to the priesthood in the Church of England, at a special reception at Lambeth Palace, London. The Rev Margaret Maslen was a guest of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Rev Justin Welby, at a party to honour the pioneer women priests at the headquarters of the Anglican Communion.
She joined a rapidly diminishing band who paved the way to one of the most significant, if hard-fought, changes in the church’s history. “There may not be many more such occasions” she said. “I was one of the youngest! But there are now many more women priests, and very widely accepted.” Margaret, who was born and raised in Swindon, is a professional librarian who was priested at Bath Abbey in Bath and Wells Diocese. She is married to the Rev Richard Maslen, also retired and a volunteer member of the Tetbury ministry team. They were both incumbents in Bath and Wells Diocese before retiring to Sherston and enjoy taking services in partnership.
10. The countdown to Christmas
Well the countdown for Christmas has started as Tetbury’s popular town centre art gallery, Spencer House Gallery, takes a walk on the wild side for its third Christmas show, opening on 22 November. Wild Things is the theme of the exhibition, which features the work of more than 75 regional artists producing art of many styles and media – paintings, prints, drawings, ceramics, glass, textiles, wood and papier mâché among them.
Owner and curator, Chris Woodcock, is thrilled with the scope of the work she will be showing: “As ever, our themes are hooks, not straitjackets – and our artists are free to interpret the theme in any way they like. Wonderful wild animals, wild landscapes and seascapes, wild emotions and wildlife of all kinds feature this time. It’s also a natural fit for expressive use of materials and really uplifting concepts.
”Most of the artists at the gallery are from the Cotswolds region and surrounding counties - and Chris ensures the work on show covers a range of price points so there is something for everyone, whether they are looking for a large statement piece of art for a room scheme or a special gift for a loved one or friend.
The exhibition takes many weeks to assemble: you can catch an early-bird glimpse of some of the work now. It opens officially after with the final hanging and Private View on Friday 22 November. More information next week.
11 This year's Comic Con
What makes an event special? Well this year third Cotswold 451 Comic Con one name made all the difference 'the name is Bolland Brian Bolland!" (Apologies to 007) Brian, who to many is the definitely definitive judge Dread artist, consummate Wonder Woman cover artist and of course redefined the Joker with the now classic Killing Joke graphic novel with Alan Moore.
But you probably have your own favourite work of his amazing extensive catalogue of work. Kevin Painter founder of the 451 initiative and 451 Comic Con said 'Having Brian attend was a real coup proven by the huge number people queueing for his autograph from the moment he arrived until when he left, in fact one couple had travelled all the way from Brighton!
It also gave us the chance to launch the 451 comic awards, of which obviously Brian received one for his amazing work in the comic book field and being one of the leaders in the British invasion of American comics. local personage, cartoonist, and chair of the London Cartoon Museum Oliver Preston also received one on behalf of the Museum for again the amazing work they do to preserve and promote the genre. The final award went to Rebellion who are the publishers of 2000AD and the treasury of British comics books, for their continued work keeping the medium alive. A big thank to you to all, we are hugely indebted for their support and achievements.’
The third Tetbury Cotswold 451 Comic Con was in deed a great success there are far too many people to thank individually however special thanks must go to the teams all who brought their enthusiasm for complimentary genres for the Comic-con world firstly no Comic=Con is complete without cosplay and this was run and overseen by our very own professional princess Gwen who brought a smile to everyone's faces with the amazing children involved in dressing up and the other cornucopia of colourful characters!
And thanks must go to lea and his ‘Geek' team who brought and run retro games and food in to the event and even helped lay out the tables! But special thanks must go to the Goods Shed Trust and in particular the trustee Philip Hudson (who was there all day) who right from the first one 3 years ago has helped and supported this event. as believe it or not there was some doubting Thomases!
The main thank you is to everyone who attended and is supportive. And it is humbling to be able to put on this event of what I always call a love letter to the genre.
Thanks also must go to James Padden who was the sponsor of the first 451 comic awards, who said 'I was truly stunned by the popularity of this event, even friends said to me well done on supporting this, as they were comic fans as well. And I've already pledged my future support and look forward to the next even bigger one.’ Before then the next major 451 event will be a collaboration for world book day.
If you would like to find out more about the 451 initiative or even just just love comics please email comics451@icloud.com To quote another comic book legend Stan Lee ‘EXCELSIOR!’
