Well, what a lovely September we’re having! Unfortunately, the chilly nights have put paid to Besley’s Strawberries for the year, although I believe Styan’s will continue for a week or two.
Plums are also largely done for so we are properly into the apples and pears season, yum yum. It’s probably fair to say that with Coleshill Organic, Styan’s Family produce and Day’s Cottage Heritage Orchard, we have probably got the best range of apples you could find anywhere.
A stroll around the supermarkets will still show all the usual varieties from all over the world with maybe a couple of classic British varieties but on Saturdays at this time of year you can find a huge range!
There was a great article in the news about the artisan cheese resurgence we are enjoying in the UK. We are so fortunate that we have three of the four surviving (and thriving!) Gloucester cheese makers at the farmers market during the month, with Smart’s on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, and Jonathan Crump and Godsell’s on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays.
It is really interesting to note the similarities and the differences between them, and with cheeses like this, even the time of year and type of pasture the cows are eating can have a subtle effect on the flavours.
We are boosting our fresh flowers range with a new stallholder this week, as we are joined by Frog Lane Flower Farm from North Nibley who will have mixed bunches of dahlia for the next few weeks.
