PLANS for 55 new homes on the edge of Malmesbury could “destroy” what makes it "so special”, a councillor has said.

The jury is still out on whether Wiltshire Council will grant permission for the construction of a housing development on the southwestern outskirts of the town.

An application was submitted by Hollins Strategic Land in August and proposed 55 new dwellings on a seven-acre site off Sherston Road.

(Image: The Urbanists / Hollins Strategic Land) The applicant described it as “an excellent opportunity” to “create a successful gateway” to the town, suggesting that the homes would offer “a positive addition” to the area.

However, Cllr Gavin Grant has shared his plans to oppose the project.

He said: "Malmesbury is a beautiful and special place with a tremendous community spirit.

“I understand why developers want to build here.

“But we already have more than 300 new homes to be built here with no extra support for our GP surgery, dentists or other essential services."

He added: “Yet another speculative development will stretch them beyond their break point and threatens to destroy what makes Malmesbury so special.

“I will oppose building in this greenfield site off the Sherston Road."

Hollins Strategic Land has been contacted for further comment.

Wiltshire Council is expected to make a decision by the end of October.
