Before it became necessary to plug musical instruments into an electric supply and when people called "DJ"s pushed gramophone records, around to make noises deemed to be entertainment; learning an acoustic instrument was an important part of the School Curriculum, writes Robert Heaven. 

Cirencester schools regularly put on Music festivals and shows to entertain parents and the public.

There were no amplifiers and ear plugs were not necessary.
