IT has been announced that Cirencester Leisure Centre will be temporarily closed due to the General Election.
The site will be the control centre for General Election organisation and also the count for both the North Cotswolds constituency and South Cotswolds constituency, according to officials.
This means the centre will be partially closed from Tuesday, June 25, with a full closure on Tuesday, July 2 which includes the car park.
It comes as the centre is currently undergoing a major refurbishment.
The General Election is due to take place on Thursday, July 4.
The closures will include:
- Main hall from 6pm Tuesday, June 25 to 10pm Friday, July 5
- Squash courts from 9am Tuesday, July 2 to 10pm Friday, July 5
- Dance studio from 9am Tuesday, July 2 to 10pm Friday, July 5
- The whole centre including the car park will be closed on Tuesday, July 2
Cotswold District Council’s CEO Robert Weaver said: “The general election has been called with just six weeks' notice.
“The council’s team and Freedom Leisure have been doing a great job of working together to make sure we have the staff and resources needed to deliver the general election at short notice, whilst reducing the disruption to leisure centre users as much as possible.
“With the ongoing refurbishment of the leisure centre and the election being run from the centre, there will unfortunately be some disruption to normal services, as set out below.
“I’d like to thank people for their patience and understanding.”
Cirencester Leisure Centre is also undergoing significant refurbishment, which is due to be completed by the end of summer 2024.
The improvements include:
- Refurbished swimming pool and sports hall changing rooms and showers
- New water play features for younger swimmers on poolside
- State-of-the-art indoor cycling studio
- New flooring for existing group exercise studio
- Assisted gym area to be created
