A CAFE and workshop space in Royal Wootton Bassett, opened by one woman with a big dream, has reached the finals of a major award for the third year running.
Gemma McAteer says she was only 16 years old when she first started dreaming of opening a coffee shop in Royal Wootton Bassett and drawing plans of what it could be, and years later that dream has become a thriving reality.
The Little Gem on Sparrow Lane has just celebrated its second birthday and in that short time, it has been a finalist for the Muddy Stiletto’s Best Café award three times.
“I really didn’t think we were going to get to the final this year,” owner Gemma McAteer told the Adver.
“This year there are a lot more coffee shops in Royal Wootton Bassett and people go to all of them which I love because we all really support each other. But I did think it would mean the votes would be divided.
“I was shocked when I saw the email come through to say we were through to the finals.”
The Muddy Stiletto’s nominations, which are voted for by customers, prove that The Little Gem has captured the hearts of the local community, which is exactly what it aims to do.
The dog-friendly coffee shop also hosts an array of regular workshops and evening events to offer the activities and support groups that people in Royal Wootton Bassett want.
“I’m from Bassett and when I was growing up there was nothing to do, you’d always have to go to Bristol," said Gemma.
“So I really just want to hold spaces for people. We’ve had things like candle making, book clubs and neurodivergent groups, and I’d really love to start up a grief group because recently it’s something that so many people around me are going through."
Although The Little Gem was named the winner of the Best Coffee Shop award in 2022 shortly after the café opened, this year Gemma said it’s all about celebrating her staff.
“I used to not be bothered about pushing for it because I thought we’ve won before and I want to give another business the chance to be celebrated,” said Gemma.
"But this year I’ve been off for 8 months on maternity leave and the two girls that have been working there have held down the fort for me this whole time.
“So I’d really love for us to win it in recognition of them.”
Voting for the Best Coffee Shop closes on April 19 and the winner is expected to be announced in July.
