A BMW driver has been banned from the roads for three years following a serious crash on a key route into Malmesbury.

Shehryar Hussain, aged 24, was spotted overtaking a number of vehicles at speed in a BMW i4 on the B4042 eastbound out of Malmesbury shortly after 1pm on Wednesday, August 9, before crashing into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of this vehicle – a woman in her 40s from Gloucestershire – sustained serious hand injuries as a result of the collision.

Hussain pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Swindon Crown Court on Friday, February 16.

As well as the driving ban, Hussain was given a 20-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £187 plus complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

PC Luke Hobbs, of Wiltshire Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “Hussain was driving a car which was due to be delivered to a company as part of his employment – he had never driven the car before and was unfamiliar with the stretch of road where he caused this collision.

"His driving fell well below the standard expected of a competent driver and he is lucky that nobody was killed as a result of his actions.”
