A STRETCH of the M4 is still closed this morning following a “serious” crash.
Due to a "police led incident," National Highways initially closed the M4 in both directions from junction 15 to junction 17, yesterday evening at around 7.30pm.
However, the stretch of road between junctions 16 and 17 has now been reopened.
Meanwhile, junction 15 (Swindon) to 16 (Royal Wootton Bassett) of the M4 remains closed in both directions.
A spokesperson from National Highways said: “Following a serious incident yesterday evening, the M4 remains closed in both directions while police investigation work continues.
“Investigations are expected to continue through the morning, with eastbound traffic being diverted via a Hollow Circle route around Swindon from junction 16 to rejoin the M4 at junction 15, with the westbound diversion operating in reverse.
“The closure, to assist the police-led incident, is expected to impact this morning’s traffic, and in the meantime, National Highways is advising drivers to allow extra time for their journeys."
Swindon Police said in a statement last night: “The westbound carriageway has also now been closed.
“Please be aware that the M4 between junction 16 for Royal Wootton Bassett and 15 for Swindon is currently closed eastbound following a serious collision.
“The road is likely to remain closed for the foreseeable future.
“Please find alternate routes.”
