PUPILS at a small village school near Cirencester are celebrating after coming first place in a county wildlife quiz. 

North Cerney Primary, which has 50 pupils, successfully beat two other schools in the Gloucestershire Nature Quiz, after competing in five other rounds beforehand.

Headteacher Suki Pascoe said: “I think that it’s amazing and I’m so thrilled that North Cerney have done so well. 

“The questions were so challenging! I’m proud of every one of them.

“This is the very first time North Cerney have won the quiz and we hope more children will be inspired to get involved and want to join the team next year.”

Organised by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, the annual competition was first held 1976 with six schools and in 2024 celebrates its 48th anniversary.

This year more than 400 children from 72 different schools in Gloucestershire took part. 

Quizmaster Barry Jackson said: “I find these kids a tremendous inspiration. 

“They give me so much hope for the future; hope that nature might be in safer hands than we sometimes fear.”
