TOWN leaders have announced plans for a memorable event which will take in Malmesbury at the weekend.

The 9th Supply Regiment RLC, from The Royal Logistic Corps, have been bestowed Freedom of the Town of Malmesbury.

They will march through the town with drums beating, bands playing and banners flying on Saturday, May 20.

The Freedom of the Town is a significant honour, demonstrating trust, loyalty, and a sense of community between a town and an individual.

It can bestowed by a town or parish council upon a valued member of the community, a visiting celebrity or dignitary or a military group.

The 9th Regiment plan to depart from Bremilham Rise at 10am, along the parade route of Bristol Street, Abbey Row and the High Street and will arrive at the Cross Hayes car park at 10.15am.

The car park will turn into a parade square and army band base therefore all vehicles must be removed by 6pm on Friday, May 19.

There will be formal presentation of medals and inspection of the troops between 10.17am and 10.35am.

This will be followed by a closing address, with a prayer reading by Rev. Ross and a speech by Malmesbury Mayor Gavin Grant.

Malmesbury town clerk Claire Mann said: "We would love to see the public come and enjoy this historic event and support our local regiment.

"This is a prestigious honour bestowed on the regiment to recognise its important role as a protector of our country and the significant support work it undertakes both in the UK and overseas.”

Parking will be suspended along one side of the High Street and there will be road closures to enable the march to take place.

However, parking will be available at the Station Road car park but the steps into town are steep so this may not be suitable option for everyone.

Stewards will be in place to help the public and those who wish to use buses from Cross Hayes will need to use temporary bus stops.

The Cross Hayes car park, parking on the High Street and road closures will re-open after the event has finished.
