A 'DISGUSTED' customer says a faulty paint tin spilt all over her car - but 'rude' staff at the store told her 'it's your responsibility'.
Cheryl Barlow had only just bought the Dulux tin from Homebase in Blackpole, Worcester moments before it tipped over in her footwell, sending paint pouring across the back of her car.
She estimates she was driving at under 30mph when heading straight on at a city roundabout. To her horror, the paint tipped over and the lid popped off as a deluge of Dulux flooded her car.
Mrs Barlow had wanted to decorate her bedroom and bathroom so headed to Homebase in the Elgar Retail Park on Tuesday afternoon to pick up paint and rollers, spending more than £100.
The 45-year-old of Norton, Worcester, said after leaving the store with her purchases she drove along Cotswold Way towards Brindley Road (near the Tesco store) and was going straight on at the roundabout when she heard 'a thump in the back of my car', turned her head and 'did a double take'.
"The paint had tipped onto its side, the lid has come off and it's all over the back of my car. I never would have expected that to happen. It should not come off going around a corner at just 30mph," she said.
The Dulux Rock Salt filled both footwells in her Hyundai i20. She phoned her husband who advised her to go back to the shop straight away, calling first to let them know what had happened. She was kept on hold for five minutes and was told she could come into the store but 'it's your responsibility once the paint has left the shop - it's nothing to do with us', Mrs Barlow said.
When she returned she says the same woman who served her before said: "I knew it was going to be you!"
Mrs Barlow, who has been shopping at Homebase for 25 years, said: "I will not shop there again."
She described the woman's attitude as 'very rude' and says the remark was shouted across the shop floor within earshot of other customers.
Homebase offered to replace the paint but Mrs Barlow told them: "That's really not good enough."
She insisted they refund everything she had bought. "I don't want to give them my business. You can have it all back. I left the store.
She added: "I'm just trying to get the message out. There's no comeback. No compensation. Don't buy your paint from Homebase.
"I'm angry, disappointed and disgusted with the attitude from everyone."
Since it happened she has done her best to clean the car but has had to throw out the car mats.
A spokesperson for Homebase said: "We’re sorry for the experience Ms Barlow had when shopping with us. We’re looking into her complaint further, including compensation for the damage caused to her car."
