A Mercedes driver has been charged after he allegedly drove the wrong way down the M4.
The vehicle was halted by Wiltshire Police near Leigh Delamere services on Monday morning after several attempts were made to stop him.
The incident occurred at around 3am on Monday and members of the public called 999 after spotting a Mercedes A 200 AMG travelling the wrong way down the highway.
Now, Wiltshire Police have charged a man from Oxfordshire.
Alexis Moore, of Richmere Road in Didcot, has been charged with dangerous driving and is due to appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “A man has been charged with dangerous driving following an incident on the M4 in the early hours of yesterday morning.
“Alexis Moore, 61, of Richmere Road, Didcot, was arrested following reports of a vehicle being driven the wrong way down the M4.
“He was arrested near Leigh Delamere services and taken to custody for questioning.
“He has since been charged with dangerous driving and remanded in custody to appear at Swindon Magistrates Court this morning.”
According to police, the Mercedes A200 AMG was first spotted by concerned members of the public heading the wrong way down the motorway between junctions 14 and 15.
Officers went to Junction 16 at Swindon and noticed the vehicle travelling west on the eastbound carriageway in lane three.
The vehicle was eventually stopped just past Leigh Delamere services, near Chippenham.
