Footage showing Port Vale football fans punching Swindon Town players was aired on TV tonight’s League Two play-off semi-final.

Vale booked their place at Wembley after beating Town 6-5 on penalties but a melee broke out when home fans invaded the pitch in celebration after Ellis Iandolo missed from the spot.

Right-back Mandela Egbo, who posted a selfie with a cut on his nose, says he was injured in the attack.

He tweeted: "How you scummy fans get two free shots and only manage a scratch? And I’m supposed to keep my cool – if I react I’m the bad guy right?”

Swindon Town head coach Ben Garner confirmed in his post-match interview a player was hurt after Vale football thugs invaded the pitch.

Garner told the Adver that he and his players felt “afraid for their safety” as the opposition’s fans punched and kicked the Robins on the pitch.

Fans have expressed their disgust at the scenes aired on TV and circulating on social media.

Wycombe Wanderers’ player Jack Grimmer weighed in, tweeting: “An absolute disgrace with fans running on the pitch at Port Vale Football Club and running at Swindon Town players.

“Especially after what happened the other night.”
