A garden near Cirencester has celebrated its 10th anniversary of being open to the public.

Mel Tanner, owner of The Coach House in Ampney Crucis was presented with a long service certificate and trowel by Vanessa Berridge, the National Garden Scheme's county organiser for Gloucestershire.

Sarah Wakeman, regional fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK was also present to mark the charity’s 10–year association with the National Garden Scheme.

Mel and Nicholas Tanner moved into The Coach House in 1988. It was formerly the coach house and stables for Ampney Park.

“We had had two gardens before moving here but we only improved on what existed in them," said Mel.

"At The Coach House, we’ve been able to create a garden that fits the house.

"It’s evolved with changing needs as our three children have grown up.”

Expansive lawns for games have been developed into a series of different garden rooms.

“We have no views to landscape beyond, but there are beautiful old buildings around our plot and a lovely canopy of mature trees," said Mel.

"We’ve added plenty of structure to create vistas within the garden. The garden is constantly evolving.

"It’s wonderful that visitors come and enjoy it as much as we do.”

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the association between the National Garden Scheme and Parkinson’s UK.

“As the most significant charitable funder of nursing in the UK we’re delighted to be marking this special anniversary with Parkinson’s UK this year,” said National Garden Scheme chief executive, George Plumptre.

“The occasion marks not only almost £1.5 million of funding to the charity but a dynamic and positive partnership which is helping to change the lives of 145,000 people living with Parkinson’s in the UK.

The charity’s staff will mark the occasion by visiting the 100 National Garden Scheme gardens nationally that have been opening for 10 years this year.

Sarah Wakeman visited The Coach House on Tuesday, April 12 as part of this celebration.

She said: “It’s wonderful to be able to celebrate 10 years of achievements together, and in such beautiful surroundings. Thank you to all National Garden Scheme garden owners for opening your garden gates to make such vital fundraising possible.”

The other Gloucestershire gardens celebrating 10 years of opening for the National Garden Scheme in 2022 are Susan and Richard Wakeford's Charingworth Court in Winchcombe, David and Henrietta Howard's Daglingworth House, Bryan and Christine Bamber's The Gables in Newnham-on-Severn, Rupert and Mandy Williams-Ellis's Snugborough Mill in Blockley, Moreton in Marsh.
