Major changes to parking and traffic control in the centre of Cirencester have been revealed.

Cirencester Town Council have worked with Gloucestershire County Council on the plans, designed to make the Market Place a greener and safer place and fix problems that have arisen since the regeneration scheme was completed in 2017.

The changes could be implemented as early as the summer.

One issue being addressed is Cricklade Street, which has been plagued by cars ignoring the pedestrian zone in place from 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

The road will now be completely closed from Market Place and West Way. Only pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles will have access, with clearer no entry signs put in place.

South of West Way, the restricted parking zone will be extended along Cricklade Street to the junction with Ashcroft Road. There will be new loading bays. Parking restrictions south of Ashcroft Road will be revised from limited waiting to pay and display (P&D) and there will be the addition of blue badge holders only parking.

West Way will be reopened for traffic travelling north-bound from North/South Way to Cricklade Street in order to cater for the movement of loading vehicles to businesses on Cricklade Street. New loading and blue badge holders parking bays will be added and there will be two-way cycle access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Here are the proposed changes to other town centre roads:

Dyer Street

Extension of restricted parking zone which will include designated loading bays and blue badge holders parking as well as P&D parking provision.

Market Place

Reconfiguration of parking and waiting restrictions outside the Kings Head hotel including extension of the taxi rank as well as provision of blue badge holder parking and loading space. Addition of motorcycle parking spaces.

North Way and South Way

Consistent no waiting and no loading 8am-6.30pm restriction along length of streets.

Castle Street

Addition of P&D, blue badge holders and loading only bays added to west of Brewery Court.

A consultation on all the changes is running until April 14. Go to haveyoursaygloucestershire.uk.engagementhq.com/cirencester-parking-review
