The line-up for WOMAD has been announced as the festival prepares to make its return after two years away.

The World of Music, Arts and Dance event is returning to Charlton Park near Malmesbury from July 28-31.

Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara’s will be kicking off the 40th anniversary event on the Thursday night.

Angelique Kidjo will perform her re-imagination of Talking Heads’ Remain in Light, whilst award-winning wordsmith Kae Tempest will make their WOMAD debut.

Also performing for the first time is the only all-female mariachi band in Europe, Mariachi Las Adelitas, a multi-national mariachi band born out of a desire to shatter stereotypes within this traditionally male-dominated genre.

Other big names on the bill include rock band The Flaming Lips and hip-hop group The Sugarhill Gang.

Fantastic Negrito, Nitin Sawhney, Greentea Peng will also be performing at the festival, which was co-founded by former Genesis vocalist Peter Gabriel back in 1980.

Other entertainment on offer includes the Taste the World stage, where some of the weekend’s performers will get the chance to show off their culinary credentials .

There is the tranquility of the World of Wellbeing and luxury of the WOMAD Spa.

An array of dance and music workshops will be available, while the spoken word will be celebrated through author talks, debates, and discussions.

There are also a number of child-friendly activities, including the Sunday afternoon parade.

Festival director Chris Smith said: "The best possible way to celebrate 40 years of WOMAD, shining a spotlight on the cultures of the world, is our long-awaited return to Charlton Park after two difficult years, and what a return it will be with this spectacular line-up.

"We have received so much love and support from everyone who makes WOMAD possible we guarantee to repay that support with an unforgettable weekend that launches the next 40 years of the World’s Festival.”
