MALMESBURY has got the green light to start the transformation of its historic town hall.
Planning officers from North Wiltshire District Council have given their approval to plans which include a more prominent information centre, commercial offices and a range of improvements to bring it up to modern standards.
It means work on the first phase should be able to start this summer and be completed by this time next year.
The building was handed over by NWDC last April for the sum of just £1. When it took control Malmesbury Town Council decided a major revamp was needed to counter long term neglect and took out a £500,000 loan towards the cost.
The scheme includes a new entrance for the council chamber, an improved staircase and a new archway linking the two halves of the building.
It also provides a new home for the Athelstan Museum along the back of the building.
