VILLAGERS in Daglingworth have praised the quick work of firefighters to save their homes from flood water.

The heavy rain over the weekend saw several inches of water rush into homes in the village near Cirencester, which is the home of Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown.

Speaking this morning, Natalie Meredith, who has lived in the village for 25 years, described the situation as “choas”.

“Everything’s gone up on blocks and as much as possible has gone upstairs,” she said.

“We all feel a bit like we’ve got jet lag.”

She paid tribute to the firefighters from Cirencester, Cheltenham and Painswick who had been working around the clock to minimise damage to homes.

“They’ve been here since 10am on Sunday afternoon,” she said.

"Their attitude, friendliness and support has been outstanding.

“We can’t thank them enough – without them we would be three feet under.”

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident commander Tim Lanfear said his crew were doing everything they could to minimise the damage to homes in the village.

“We are trying to get one of our high volume pumps and move water from higher points in the village to the lower points but obviously we need to be aware of where the water will be going after that,” he said. “Some of the residents are very elderly so we are quite concerned about their wellbeing.”

He added he was grateful for the help of officers from Gloucestershire County Council’s highways department.
