EAGER festival-goers donned their wellies and coats last weekend for three days of music and dancing in Lechlade.

Not put off by the rain and the mud, people travelled from as far as Scotland to enjoy this year’s eighties-themed Lechlade Music Festival at Riverside Park.

Punk princess Toyah Wilcox headlined on Friday night to a packed crowd and was presented with an impressive birthday cake from Cotswold's Finest Cakes, which she said she would rather take home to put on display than cut.

She said she was determined to "wake up Lechlade" as she played well into the evening.

Festival director Jennie Rainsford said despite the weather, she thought everyone had a fantastic time.

"I don't think we have had one negative comment yet," she said. "Lots of people said the quality of music has gone up again and the weather was fantastic on Sunday. Dr and the Medics got the whole place rocking on Sunday and Toyah was just incredible.

"One group of women came from Cornwall and ended up travelling for 29 hours as their camper van broke down and they had to go back," Jennie added. "They were so determined to get here because they said they love the festival so much."

Visitors enjoyed face painting, dance tents, quirky stalls, and a wide array of festival food including stone baked pizzas, authentic vegan curry and Spanish churros with chocolate sauce.

Many sheltered from the rain and enjoyed cocktails in huge Tipi’s or took cover under the marquee where they could purchase local ales, beer and cider.

"It's a fantastic local event that shows everything the Cotswolds has to offer," said Cirencester resident Tilly Bould who attended the festival. "Wonderful music, good food and a fantastic atmosphere. It really puts Lechlade on the map."

The family friendly music festival was nominated for Best Small Festival and Best Family Festival in the UK Festival Awards 2013 and was named Tourism Event of the Year in the Cotswold Tourism Awards 2014.

"We've got a small break now and then we'll be organising next year's festival," said Jennie. "We'll be open for band applications in August."
